MuTaCo is a unique, immersive opportunity for writers and musicians from the region to learn to collaborate in new ways to bring stories to life through words and music. Over the course of a weekend, teams of composers and writers will collaborate to create stories. Teams will rehearse with a director to present and perform their stories at the end of the weekend.

Everybody with an interest and passion for musical theater and drama. While we don’t ask for experience in writing or composing for musical theater, we need to make sure composers are capable of reading and writing music and writers have experience in writing dialogue and lyrics or poems. While the main focus is on musical theater writing, artistic director, Mike von der Nahmer, will encourage each participant to look for their own unique approach in telling stories with music and words.

The fee will be $300 for the weekend; participants will be expected to provide their own lodging and food. A scholarship fund has been put in place providing five $300 scholarships and ten $150 scholarships, making the experience accessible to a broad range of people.

MuTaCo is set to return on November 1-3, 2019 and will be held at the Grand Center for Arts & Culture (GCAC) in New Ulm, MN. This year’s Musical Tales Concerto theme is “Dare to Scare” with participants working on their scariest story yet!

MuTaCo staff includes Mike von der Nahmer as artistic director and Anita Prestidge as director.
